Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens Expands Access to Services

The Seattle Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens now offers information on health insurance, estate planning, and other legal issues at their office, conveniently located on the 3rd Avenue busway in downtown Seattle. The Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens is located in the Central Building, Suite 350, 810 3rd Avenue (between Columbia & Marion Streets).

The Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens now hosts Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) in its office. While part of the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner, the nonprofit Senior Services sponsors the program in King County.

SHIBA provides trained volunteers to assist the public with free, unbiased, and confidential assistance with Medicare and health care choices. SHIBA can help you:

  • Understand your health care coverage options and rights
  • Evaluate and compare health insurance plans
  • Report health care fraud and abuse

Read more about SHIBA in SHIBA Helps You Find Answers to Medicare and Health Care Coverage Questions.

Now another Senior Services program—Senior Rights Assistance—is available at the Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens. Like SHIBA, Senior Rights Assistance utilizes trained volunteers to assist with information such as:

  • Estate planning (including wills, powers of attorney and health care directives)
  • Guardianship
  • Landlord/tenant concerns
  • Elder law attorney referrals

The Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens is a unit of Aging and Disability Services (ADS), the Area Agency on Aging for King County. Senior Services is the largest of several dozen community-based organizations with which ADS contracts—organizations that collaborate to provide access to a seamless network of programs and services throughout Seattle-King County. In 2012, over 37,000 older adults, family caregivers, and adults with disabilities in King County received services from ADS and its contractors.
