Healthy Aging Partnership Builds Coalition for Nearly 20 Years

When it comes to serving the older adults in our community, we are sometimes limited by resources...but not by passion for the work!

The Healthy Aging Partnership (HAP) is an informal coalition of more than 30 nonprofit, government, and community organizations—primarily in King County, WA—created to tap into the collective strengths, skills, ideas, and resources of organizations and professionals serving older residents of the Puget Sound region.

Since 1995, HAP has offered a wealth of information and resources for older adults and caregivers through education, outreach, and the promotion of a free confidential information and assistance line: 1-888-4-ELDERS (

In 1999, HAP launched the first steps of a community information campaign about the needs of older adults and the resources available to assist them. Since then, HAP has:

  • Coordinated dialogues with some of our region's leading senior-oriented human service, health, educational, medical, and research organizations.
  • Educated tens of thousands of Puget Sound seniors and caregivers through news articles, radio spots, and other marketing on topics such as nutrition, falls prevention, chronic disease prevention, physical activity, home care, advocacy, support groups, dental health, strokes, hypothermia, and dealing with the death of a spouse.
  • Generated phone calls to 1-888-4ELDERS, which connects directly to Senior Information and Assistance.
  • Enhanced the lives of thousands seniors through free workshops about healthy eating, fitness, advocacy, and community action.
  • Initiated the Sound Steps walking program, which has been replicated in other states and Canada.
  • Created an Aging at Home Initiative to encourage teams of community members to implement projects to help older adults live longer, healthier lives while remaining in their homes and communities.

We remain dedicated to helping seniors live happier, healthier lives, and are committed to encouraging dialogue and collaboration among service providers. HAP meetings are held every fourth Tuesday from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. at Senior Services (Lillian Rice Building, 2208 Second Avenue, in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood). Aging services providers are welcome!

The Healthy Aging Partnership is hosting a special event during Older Americans Month (May). In line with the 2013 theme—Unleash the Power of Age—HAP invites you to attend a special screening of Gotta Dance, an award-winning documentary about the first-ever, senior hip-hop dance team. The screening will take place on Thursday, May 2, at the Northwest Film Forum, 1515 12th Ave (near 12th & Pike in Seattle). The event includes a catered reception and no-host bar beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the screening at 7:00 p.m. Pre-registration is requiredclick here to register online.
