Celebrate Neighbor Appreciation Day on Valentine's Day

There is another fun reason to recognize Valentine's Day—this year, it's also Seattle's Annual Neighbor Appreciation Day! It's a day set aside to reach out to neighbors, create new friends, and express thanks to those who help make your neighborhood a great place to live. Residents, community groups, and businesses will join together on Saturday, February 14 (and the week of) to celebrate.

Here are ways you can participate in Neighbor Appreciation Day:

  • Plan an activity for your neighborhood, such as a block party, potluck, or work party. The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods website provides ideas, tools, resources, and templates to help you organize an activity. Once scheduled, you can post your event to the events calendar.
  • Attend one of the many community activities listed on the events calendar. Many Seattle Fire stations—along with pools, parks, and neighborhoods—are hosting celebrations and work parties.
  • Send Neighbor Appreciation Day e-cards to your neighbors.
  • Share a story about your favorite neighbor. You can post stories about great neighbors or neighborhoods on the Department of Neighborhoods website, or post it to their Facebook page.

If you have an idea for a neighborhood activity, don't forget that the Department of Neighborhoods' Small Sparks Fund can help to support Neighborhood Appreciation Day projects that connect and engage people in Seattle. The deadline for applications is January 12.

Join the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and thousands of community members in celebration of what makes Seattle great—our neighbors! For more information, visit www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/neighborday or contact Wendy Watson at wendy.watson@seattle.gov.

Editor's note: While this event originated in Seattle, everyone in King County is encouraged to reach out to their neighbors on Neighbor Appreciation Day. Read about the origins of this event at www.washington.edu/wholeu/2014/02/03/neighbor-appreciation-day. Plan now for next month’s celebration!
